In addition to being a long-standing tradition at the University of Alcalá, Hispanic studies are particularly important in the “City of Cervantes”. The University of Alcalá places special emphasis on the teaching and learning of the Spanish Language, along with the promotion of Literature in Spanish. Its historic “Colegio de San Ildefonso” hosts the award ceremony of the Cervantes Prize, the world's highest literary distinction in the Spanish-speaking countries, presided over by the King of Spain every year.
The main objective of this course is to produce professionals with a high degree of understanding and expression in Spanish and good level of a foreign language, in addition to a comprehensive understanding of the historical, cultural, literary and linguistic conditions in Spanish-speaking countries.
They should be able to analyse, interpret and summarise texts, engaging in in-depth diachronic and synchronic study of the Spanish language, well as its phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. They should be capable of understanding the social, historical, political, and philosophical contexts of the Hispanic world, from a democratic standpoint, taking into account values such as equality of opportunities, integration and a culture for peace.
They should have a command of Spanish language and literature, using specialised and advanced handbooks and including innovative aspects; be capable of interpreting oral and written texts of general and specialised contents, even when different from their particular knowledge area; able to identify linguistic and literary historical periods, genres, styles and tendencies; be capable of applying the acquired knowledge to their professional environment, convey their reasons to general and specialised audiences, and continue their training on an autonomous basis.

The suitable profile for a student on the degree course in Hispanic Studies is a person with humanistic and linguistic interests, capacity for understanding and synthesis, an interest in Spanish and Latin American literature, good written expression, a gift for languages, reasoning and abstraction abilities, and a taste for reading, imagination and creativity.
Graduates in Hispanic Studies are well trained for activities related to communication. In addition to a professional profile related to Spanish language teaching, graduates in Hispanic Studies can focus their professional careers towards sectors including linguistic and cultural mediation, linguistic and literary planning and consultancy, media management and consultancy, diplomacy, tourism and cultural management, publishing, translation and interpretation, and in general, positions in the civil service and in companies requiring a good knowledge of the Spanish language.
