José Vicente Saz Pérez (Madrid, 1959) is a graduate of Medicine and Surgery (1982), resident specialist in Microbiology and Parasitology (M.I.R., Hospital de La Paz) and obtained his degree of Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (1985) from the University of Alcalá, where he commenced his teaching career first as an assistant lecturer, then for almost thirty years as Professor, before becoming full professor in 2016.
A specialist in Microbiology and Parasitology, from 2009 to 2015 he held a teaching post at the “Príncipe de Asturias” Teaching Hospital, where he now leads the Microbiology and Parasitology Unit.
His research has focused on the field of zoonosis, more particularly on emerging viral diseases transmitted by rodents and arthropods, and on brucellosis and tuberculosis. He has achieved three six-year National Research Council research assessments and has been principal researcher on five competitive research projects, as well as acting as Coordinator in the Cooperative Research Network “Risk-factor identification and characterization of arboviruses and roboviruses in Spain”. He has supervised 11 doctoral theses, published nine book chapters and over forty articles in scientific journals, and presented eighty papers at national and international conferences.
In the course of his wide-ranging teaching he has achieved six five-year teaching assessments. In the former and current degrees in Medicine he has taught such subjects as Medical Microbiology and Parasitology or Preventive Medicine and Public Health. At postgraduate level he has run the master’s program in Senior Management in the Health Services and Business Management (Regional Health Department and University of Alcalá, 2006-2010), coordinated the doctoral program in Microbiology and Parasitology (1990-1992) and directed the doctoral program in Health Sciences (2009-2010).
As for academic and research management, he has held the posts of Academic Secretary and Deputy Head of the Department of Microbiology (1987-1994), Vice-Dean of Academic Organization of the Faculty of Medicine (1996-2004), Chair of the Managing Committee of the Degree Program in Physical Activity and Sport (2003-2010), Dean of the Faculty of Medicine (2004-2010), Director of the SEMERGEN Chair of Primary Care, Director of the Clinical Skills Training and Competence Assessment Unit (2009-2011), Vice-President of Academic Planning and Teaching Staff (2010-2014), Vice-President of Teaching and Students (2014-2015) and Vice-President of Teaching and Research Staff (2014-2018). He has also been First Vice-Chair of the Ramón y Cajal Health Research Institute (IRyCIS, 2010-2018) and member of the Governing Council of the Ministry of Defense’s Mixed Biosanitary Research Institute (IMIDEF, 2013-2018).
He has been awarded the Military Merit Cross with White Badge and the University of Alcalá’s Silver Medal.
