Graduates in Biology will be able to manage general and specialised knowledge in the various biological disciplines, at a basic and applied level. They will also be able to use the most relevant methods and techniques for the analysis and study of this field. Graduates in Biology will therefore be to participate and carry out research projects in any of the following biological areas: Botany, Zoology, Ecology, Plant Physiology, Animal Physiology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Genetics and Biochemistry, as well as collaborating in multidisciplinary projects where knowledge and experience of Biology are required.
This course aims to produce biologists able to use the scientific method in basic and applied research; capable of identifying the various species of living beings (plants, animals, microorganisms), as well as existing fossil records. These graduates will develop a genuine vocation for knowledge and understanding of individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems, as well as the ability to solve problems affecting natural environments.
Graduates in Biology should be capable of identifying and classifying organisms at the different levels of organisation of living beings and their paleontological evidence; carrying out phylogenetic analyses; analysing and handling cells, tissues and organisms; isolating and cultivating microorganisms; managing and preserving samples; designing and applying bio-technological processes; interpreting the behaviour of living beings; managing, preserving and restoring populations and ecosystems; conducting, writing and carrying out biological projects.
They will be equipped to work professionally and efficiently in a biological laboratory, being aware of and applying current regulations governing the safety, handling and elimination of biological and chemical waste, and keeping a record of the activities carried out.

Students of this degree should be interested in living beings, their biological functions, development and distribution in nature, as well as the interactions between nature and various living beings, their environment, environmental problems, etc. The capacity for observation, perception, logical reasoning, analysis and synthesis, visual memory, sensitivity, creativity and methodological rigour are valuable qualities.
Graduates in Biology will be qualified to engage in research and development in life sciences, public health, the pharmaceutical industry, the agriculture and food industry and biotechnology; environmental studies; culture of animal, plant and microbial species; classification, conservation and management of natural resources, with the related information and documentation in museums, zoological institutions, botanical gardens, scientific foundations and the media; commerce and marketing of biology-related products and services.
