Graduates in Health Biology will have a basic, applied and broad-based scientific training in biological disciplines related to the Health Sciences, providing them with an understanding of how the human body works and the ability to study and manage health and illness. Areas of great interest at present, such as cancer, stem cells, assisted reproduction, the human genome, genomics and proteomics, neurobiology, and other issues within the field of biomedicine are covered on this course.
The application of these and other related contents in the field of biotechnology, pharmaceutical industry, the agro-food industry, clinical analyses, environmental analyses, epidemiologic studies, etc. are also included. Students will learn how to use the appropriate methods and techniques for this type of studies that are widely used in laboratories.
Students will be able to carry out cytological and histological analyses, biochemical, genetic, microbiologic, parasitological and immunologic studies; as well as analyses of abnormal biochemical, cellular and microbiological parameters in blood and urine; study and characterise human and animal samples; isolate and cultivate pathogenic organisms, and apply all their experimental knowledge to preventing and solving public health problems.
They must be capable of working in a laboratory, taking into account safety and handling conditions, quality control, bio-sanitary waste management, including recording these activities.
