Objectives

The University of Alcalá is aware of the importance of international communication and exchanges, and promotes bilingual Spanish-English studies in all its Faculties and Schools.

The main objective of the Degree in English Studies is to produce professionals with a high capacity for understanding and expression in English and a good level of proficieny in another foreign language, in addition to a comprehensive understanding of the historical, cultural, literary and linguistic conditions in English-speaking countries.

They should be able to analyse, interpret and summarise texts, engaging in in-depth diachronic and synchronic study of the English language and literature, well as its phonological, lexical, morphological and syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. They should be capable of understanding the social, historical, political, and philosophical contexts of the Anglo-Saxon world, from a democratic standpoint, taking into account values such as equality of opportunities, integration and a culture for peace.

Competences

Students start by improving their level of English language proficiency and acquiring general humanistic knowledge, with in-depth study of the Spanish language, with the help of specialised and advanced handbooks and including innovative aspects; There should be capable of interpreting English oral and written texts of general and specialised contents, even outside their particular field of knowledge; able to identify linguistic and literary historical periods, genres, styles and tendencies; use a second foreign language fluently; and be capable of applying the knowledge acquired to their professional environment, conveying their reasoning to general and specialised audiences, and continuing the training on an autonomous basis.

Student profile

Those interested in this course should have an intermediate level of English, be interested in humanities and linguistics, have good memory and written expression skills, the capacity for synthesis and a gift for languages. An interest in culture and literature, a taste for reading, imagination and creativity would be desirable.

Professional opportunities and officially regulated professions

Graduates in English studies are able to work professionally in: teaching in secondary schools, adult education, lifelong learning and private language teaching centres. Translation and interpretation, on either a freelance or employed basis, in publishing houses, the media, and cultural industries. Textual and literary criticism, proofreading, literary review and consultancy, translation and documentation, philology, linguistics and grammar, press collaboration, literary production, libraries, research in archives and libraries.
