Conversation exchanges (pen pals)
Description: Individual conversation exchanges: Spanish-English, English-Spanish.
Aim: Adaptation of foreign students to the UAH and the surrounding area. To offer students at the UAH the opportunity to practice the English language with native speakers.
Cost: Free.
Requisito: Participants must be students at the University of Alcalá and aged between 18 and 25 years old.
Registration: Complete a form containing: Full name,
studies and degree course at the UAH, postal address, e-mail and telephone
number. This file must be sent by e-mail to miguel.lera@tufts-skidmore.es.
Course dates: October to December (Autumn) - February to May (Spring). The months not included in these two teaching periods will be used for e-mail correspondence between the two students. After choosing and completing the exchanges for a four-month period, those interested will have to wait until the next four-month period to participate in the programme.
Objectives: To seek integration into Spanish culture through the development of the level of comprehension and practice of the Spanish language. To disseminate the practice and use of English among students at the UAH.
How it works: Every four-month period, we contact interested Spanish students and give them details of one of our future students.
The first contact takes place by e-mail. We advise each student to write in the language they are studying (although some flexibility is allowed to establish the relationship based on individual taste and as naturally as possible).
After our students have arrived in Spain we organise a party/get-together for the students to get to know each other personally.
From that point on, the relationship and the exchange are coordinated by the students themselves. We suggest that they meet to talk for at least one hour a week in Spanish and another hour in English, but students are free to adapt the exchange to suit their needs. We encourage the idea that these meetings take place in informal environments and outside academic circles.
IMPORTANT: The exchanges are arranged while our students are still at their home universities.
