Degree in Medicine

Doctors are professionals responsible for maintaining health, treating disease and restoring functions that have been lost or affected due to pathological processes. These tasks involve both individuals and the population as a whole. Medicine therefore covers the fields of health promotion and education, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as rehabilitation.

Students of Medicine should acquire the scientific principles and abilities necessary to work professionally as doctors. The course begins with the study of the healthy human body, continues with the process of becoming ill and ends with the study of disease. The main purpose of these studies is the acquisition of the knowledge and abilities necessary to competently carry out the functions of diagnosis and treatment, using the appropriate methodologies for the maintenance and promotion of health and the prevention of illness, and the appropriate techniques for rehabilitation.

Accordingly, they should be able to recognise the essential elements of the medical profession, including ethical principles, legal responsibilities and professional care focused on patients; understand and recognise the structure and functions of normal human bodies, at the molecular, cellular, tissue, organic and system levels, during the various stages of life and in both sexes.
Students should be capable of understanding and recognising the effects, mechanisms and manifestations of disease on the structure and function of human body, as well as the fundamentals of action, indications and effectiveness of therapeutic intervention, on the basis of the available scientific evidence.
They should be able to create a clinical history containing all the relevant information, and perform a physical examination and mental assessment, followed by diagnosis, prognosis and treatment, based on the best possible information and considering clinical safety conditions; be capable of applying the most appropriate therapy in severe and chronic processes, and for terminal patients.

Future doctors should also be able to plan and develop preventive actions appropriate to each clinical state, by acquiring the suitable clinical experience in hospitals and health centres, under supervision, along with the fundamentals of management centred on patients, and the appropriate use of tests, medicines and other resources of the health system. They should be qualified for research and access to specialisation (the MIR examination).

A future doctor should have a vocation, a capacity for hard work, the ability to work as a team and the capacity to continuously update his/her knowledge.

Although there are jobs for doctors without any specialisation, to work as a doctor in Spain, graduates must pass a national exam (MIR) after completing their 6-year degree in Medicine, which gives them access to practical training to become a specialist doctor. This training is necessary to work professionally in the chosen specialist field, depending on the grade obtained, and consists of an internship (Internal Specialist doctor), for a period of 4 or 5 years, depending on the specialisation.

After this second period, most doctors work in the National Health System (hospitals, specialist centres or primary healthcare centres). They can work in private health centres. Doctors can also work professionally in the fields of public health, health management, medical surveillance, forensic medicine, education and research.
